Halloween Madness in Tokyo

Tokyo is known to be one of the fashion capitals of the world. For the past year and a half or so of living here, I have observed how conscious Tokyo-ites are about the little details in their everyday look. They match their outfits to their umbrellas, take time to style their hair in braids or curls, and really stick to the fashion for the season (for example, once it's autumn in the calendar, expect them to be in sweaters and jackets even if it's still warm). If you go to the Disney parks, you would see groups of matching outfits, often times Disney-themed.

Given all this, I did not expect Halloween to be so intense when I first experienced it last year.
Shibuya would be one of the places to be for people watching, so if you'll be here next weekend, you know where to go!

Heads up, it will be packedIt took me 30 minutes just to cross the Shibuya scramble from the station. It was worth it though.

I didn't need to walk into any bar or club. All the sight-seeing was just on the streets. I made friends with strangers, and they were all pleased to pose for photos. Some were in groups with matching outfits, and most were in character! The group of Annies in the photo below would sing "Tomorrow" every time someone would take photos of them.

There are no boundaries in Tokyo during Halloween night. And no shame either.

(Spot the grandpa from Dragon Ball Z)

It was also interesting how I met a bunch of people who made me feel like we're old friends. There were so many Sailor Scouts-- and even Sailor Dudes-- and most of them ran up to me to give me a hug! It was hilarious! Just some of the Sailor groups:

If you aren't inspired by the Halloween craze yet, you can check these other folks out:

For those who'll be here next Halloween weekend... See you in Shibuya!
